The Tender and Brave Boby
by Grandmother Hilda
Prologue
On the streets of our city, hundreds of stories go unnoticed every day. Some are sad, others joyful, but there are a few that deserve to be told and remembered forever. This is the story of Boby, a small being who came into this world asking for nothing, suffered the cruelest abandonment, but found the purest love. And when his moment came, he proved that gratitude and courage are not measured by size, but by the greatness of one’s heart.
This is a true story, one of those that reminds us that true heroes don’t always wear capes—sometimes they have four paws, a wet nose, and a heart willing to give everything for those they love.
Chapter 1: The Encounter of Destiny
It was a sunny spring day when Gloria left her house with her daughter Isabel. They had planned to go downtown to do some shopping. They walked along the main avenue, chatting animatedly about the week’s pending tasks, when suddenly, something made them both stop dead in their tracks.
On the side of the street, next to a garbage container, lay a small creature emitting weak and heartbreaking whimpers. It was a puppy, no more than three months old. His fur, which once might have been white, was now dirty, matted, and covered with sores. Fleas and ticks were visible to the naked eye, and his small body trembled, not only from cold but also from fear and pain.
“Mom… look,” Isabel whispered, her voice cracking with emotion. “There’s a puppy crying.”
Gloria crouched slowly, her heart sinking. Her eyes filled with tears seeing the deplorable state of this helpless being. The puppy looked at them with glassy, pleading eyes, as if he knew this might be his last chance.
“How can there be such thoughtless people?” said Gloria, with a mixture of sadness and indignation. “How can they abandon a living being like this? He’s full of mange, malnourished… he can barely move.”
Isabel, who was barely sixteen years old, felt her heart breaking into a thousand pieces. She couldn’t take her eyes off those sad little eyes that seemed to beg for help.
“We can’t leave him here, Mom. He’s going to die,” she said with determination.
Gloria nodded. She knew they had to do something, even though they had no experience caring for pets and their economic situation wasn’t the best.
“Go to that store over there,” Gloria instructed, pointing to a nearby bakery. “Ask for an old towel or cloth. We need something to wrap him in and take him home.”
Isabel ran to the bakery. Upon entering, she quickly explained the situation. The owner, a kind-hearted elderly man, handed her a clean cloth without a second thought.
“Take him to the vet as soon as possible,” he advised. “That puppy needs urgent attention.”
With infinite care, Gloria wrapped the little one in the cloth. The puppy whimpered softly but didn’t resist. It was as if he knew that finally someone was helping him. During the walk home, Isabel held him against her chest, feeling the weak beats of his heart.
“Easy, little one,” she whispered. “You’re safe now. We’re going to take care of you.”
Upon arriving home, the first thing they did was prepare some soft food and fresh water for him. The puppy ate desperately, as if he hadn’t tasted food in days, which was probably true.
“First thing tomorrow we’re taking him to the vet,” said Gloria, gently stroking the little one’s head. “Tonight he’ll sleep here, with us.”
Isabel prepared a box with old blankets and placed the puppy inside. For the first time in a long while, the little one closed his eyes in peace, surrounded by warmth and affection.
Chapter 2: The Battle for Life
The next morning, Isabel woke up early, anxious to take the puppy to the veterinary clinic. She had researched online and found a clinic that handled emergency cases at affordable prices.
Dr. Méndez, a middle-aged veterinarian with years of experience, examined the puppy with a serious expression.
“This is a severe case of malnutrition,” she explained while checking the little one. “He has mange, is infested with parasites, and his immune system is very weak. I’m going to prescribe medications and he needs urgent vaccines, but I must warn you that he’s in very delicate condition.”
“We’ll do whatever’s necessary,” Isabel responded with determination. “Tell us what he needs and we’ll get it.”
Dr. Méndez prepared an injection of vitamins and antibiotics. However, minutes after administering it, the puppy began to convulse. His small body shook violently while his eyes rolled back.
“He’s having an adverse reaction!” the doctor exclaimed, moving quickly. “His body is too weak to process the medication!”
Isabel screamed in anguish while Gloria hugged her, both crying helplessly. The doctor and her assistants worked frantically for several minutes that seemed like hours. Finally, the convulsions ceased, but the puppy remained unconscious.
“We need to hospitalize him immediately,” the doctor said gravely. “The next twenty-four hours will be critical. His malnutrition is so severe that his body is rejecting the medication. We’re going to have to stabilize him very slowly.”
Gloria and Isabel couldn’t stop crying. This little being, whom they had barely met the day before, had already found a place in their hearts.
“Please, do everything possible,” Gloria begged. “Cost doesn’t matter.”
“I’ll do my best,” Dr. Méndez promised. “But you also have to do something for me: go home, rest, and trust. This little warrior has something special. I can see it in his eyes.”
During those twenty-four hours, Isabel and Gloria could barely sleep. They called the clinic every few hours, waiting for news. They prayed, though they weren’t particularly religious, asking that the puppy would have the strength to keep fighting.
The next day, when they arrived at the clinic, Dr. Méndez greeted them with a tired but hopeful smile.
“You can go see him,” she said. “He’s a true champion.”
Upon entering the recovery room, they saw the puppy lying on a small stretcher, connected to an IV. When he heard their voices, he opened his eyes and weakly wagged his tail.
Isabel ran to him, with tears of joy streaming down her cheeks.
“You made it!” she exclaimed. “I knew you would.”
“You can take him home,” the doctor indicated, “but with strict medical instructions. Special diet, medications every eight hours, and lots, lots of love. That last part is the most important.”
Chapter 3: The Rebirth of a Champion
The following days were of intensive care. Isabel had decided to take a week off from her studies to dedicate herself completely to the puppy’s recovery. Gloria also adjusted her work schedule to be present.
They gave him a name: Boby. It was simple, but both thought it was perfect.
Day by day, Boby showed remarkable improvements. His fur began to recover its original white color, the sores healed, and his energy gradually returned. But even more impressive was the personality that was beginning to flourish.
Boby was playful, mischievous, and extraordinarily affectionate. Every time Gloria or Isabel came home, he greeted them with joyful jumps and enthusiastic licks. It was as if he wanted to thank them every second of the day for giving him a second chance.
“This puppy has an enormous heart,” Gloria would comment while Boby cuddled next to her on the sofa.
However, he also had his mischievous side. He loved to pull clothes from the clotheslines in the patio, leaving a trail of shirts and sheets all over the garden. Gloria’s plants also suffered his “gardening attacks,” ending up with dirt scattered everywhere.
“Boby! My geraniums again!” Gloria would exclaim, though she couldn’t help but laugh seeing the dog’s innocent face, with dirt on his snout.
When visitors arrived, Boby was the first to greet them, wagging his tail with so much enthusiasm that his whole body swayed. It didn’t matter if they were acquaintances or strangers; for Boby, everyone was a potential friend who deserved his affection.
As the months passed, Boby grew. And he grew a lot. His fur became thick, white as snow, and his size increased considerably.
One day, Dr. Méndez came to visit them for a routine checkup. Seeing Boby, now transformed into a beautiful adult dog, she smiled with satisfaction.
“He’s a Samoyed mix,” she explained. “These dogs are known for their loyalty, intelligence, and protective nature. Boby not only survived but became a magnificent specimen.”
Isabel stroked Boby’s abundant white fur as she listened.
“He’s the most grateful dog I’ve ever known,” she said. “Every day he shows us his love in a thousand ways.”
Chapter 4: New Paths
Six years passed since that day they found Boby. Isabel was now a twenty-two-year-old young woman, had finished her studies and gotten a stable job. She felt it was time to become independent.
“Mom, I’ve been thinking,” she told her one afternoon while having tea. “I want to move into my own apartment. I found a small one just two blocks from here.”
Gloria, although she knew this day would come, felt a mixture of pride and nostalgia.
“I’m very proud of you, daughter. You’ve grown so much…”
“I’ll take Boby with me,” Isabel continued. “And Pepita too.”
Pepita was another little dog they had rescued two years earlier, also abandoned, though her case hadn’t been as critical as Boby’s. The two dogs had become inseparable.
“Of course,” Gloria nodded. “Boby adores you. I don’t think he could be without you.”
The move was an event full of emotions. Boby seemed to understand that something important was happening. He walked back and forth, watching over the boxes and making sure everything was in order.
In her new home, Isabel established routines. Every morning she went out for walks with Boby and Pepita before going to work. On weekends, they visited Gloria, and the three enjoyed long walks in the park.
Boby adapted quickly to his new life. The apartment was smaller than Gloria’s house, but it had a small patio where he could play. Additionally, Isabel made sure he never lacked affection, walks, or special treats.
Life went on in a happy and peaceful routine. No one could imagine that very soon, that routine would be interrupted by an event that would change Boby’s life forever.
Chapter 5: The Heroic Act
It was a Saturday afternoon, one of those perfect spring days when the sun shines warmly but without overwhelming. Gloria had come to visit Isabel, and they decided to go for a walk with Boby along the main avenue. Pepita had stayed home, resting.
Boby walked proudly beside them, his white fur shining in the sun. People passing by couldn’t help but admire the beautiful dog. Some children asked permission to pet him, and Boby, always friendly, let himself be pampered with patience and joy.
As they walked along the sidewalk, they came across an everyday scene: three women conversed animatedly in front of a store. One of them, Juana, had her one-year-old baby in a stroller. The little one slept peacefully while her mother, absorbed in conversation with her friends, showed them something on her cell phone.
What none of them noticed was that the street had a slight slope. The stroller, as the baby moved in her sleep, began to move slowly. First it was barely a few centimeters, then half a meter, and suddenly, the stroller began rolling with increasing speed toward the street.
The main street was constantly traveled by vehicles: cars, trucks, motorcycles. The stroller was heading directly into traffic.
But someone did notice.
Boby, who had been sniffing a nearby tree, suddenly lifted his head. His eyes fixed on the stroller rolling faster and faster. His ears stood up, his body tensed, and in a fraction of a second, his protective instinct activated.
Without warning, Boby pulled on the leash with brutal force. Gloria, surprised, couldn’t hold it and the leash slipped from her hands.
“Boby!” she shouted, but the dog was already running.
He ran like he had never run before. His paws pounded the pavement forcefully while his only objective was to reach that stroller before it got to the street. People walking there stopped, confused, watching the large white dog running desperately.
The stroller kept gaining speed. It was only meters from the street when a truck approached at full speed.
“NOOO!” Gloria screamed when she finally understood what was happening.
Juana and her friends turned around at hearing the scream. The color drained from their faces seeing the stroller rolling out of control.
“MY BABY!” Juana shrieked, running after the stroller, but she was too far away.
Boby, with one last superhuman effort, reached the stroller just as it was about to fall from the curb into the street. With incredible precision, he positioned himself in front of the stroller, planted all four paws firmly on the ground, and pushed his body against it.
The stroller stopped dead.
The truck passed by on the street at that same instant, honking its horn. The driver hadn’t even realized how close he had been to tragedy.
The baby, awakened by the sudden movement, began to cry. Boby, panting from the effort, stood on two legs gently supporting himself on the stroller. With his front paws, he touched the baby with infinite tenderness, as if trying to console her, as if telling her: “Easy, little one. You’re safe now.”
Chapter 6: A Hero Among Us
Juana arrived running, her face bathed in tears. She lunged at the stroller, taking her baby in her arms and pressing her against her chest. The little one was crying but was completely unharmed.
“Thank God! Thank you!” Juana sobbed, kissing her daughter’s forehead.
Gloria and Isabel arrived moments later, also breathless from running. People who had witnessed the scene began to applaud spontaneously. Some had tears in their eyes.
“That dog saved the baby!” an elderly lady exclaimed.
“I’ve never seen anything like it!” commented a young man who had recorded everything on his cell phone.
“He’s a hero!” shouted a child, approaching to pet Boby.
Juana, still trembling, knelt in front of Boby. The dog, now calmer, wagged his tail gently.
“Thank you, Boby,” Juana whispered, stroking his fur. “You saved my baby’s life. I have no words to thank you.”
Then she turned to Gloria and Isabel, with tears running down her cheeks.
“You raised this angel. I don’t know how to repay you for what he did.”
“You don’t have to repay us anything,” Isabel responded, also moved. “Boby simply did what his heart told him to do.”
“I’m so embarrassed,” Juana confessed. “I got distracted for just a second… just one second, and it could have been a tragedy.”
Her friends hugged her, also moved and grateful that everything had ended well.
Juana insisted on inviting them for ice cream at the nearby ice cream shop as a token of gratitude. The heat was intense and after the tension they had experienced, everyone needed a break.
“It’s really not necessary,” said Gloria, but Juana insisted so much that they finally accepted.
While enjoying ice cream, Juana handed them her business card.
“I’m a lawyer,” she explained. “If you ever need legal help, anything at all, don’t hesitate to call me. It’s the least I can do.”
“Thank you very much,” said Isabel, putting away the card. “But the important thing is that your baby is okay.”
After saying warm goodbyes, Gloria, Isabel, and Boby returned home. Throughout the journey, they didn’t stop petting and praising Boby.
“You’re incredible, Boby,” Isabel kept telling him. “A true hero.”
What they didn’t know was that the story was just beginning.
Chapter 7: The Hero’s Fame
The next day, Isabel woke up to her phone ringing non-stop. Messages, calls, social media notifications… she was overwhelmed.
“Mom?” she called Gloria on the phone. “Have you seen the news?”
“I’m watching it right now,” Gloria responded, her voice excited. “Boby is everywhere!”
The young man who had recorded the rescue on his cell phone had uploaded the video to the internet. Within hours, it had gone viral. Millions of people had seen how Boby saved the baby, and the comments were overwhelmingly positive.
“This dog deserves a medal” “Dogs are angels on earth” “I cried watching this. What a beautiful animal” “Boby, you’re my hero”
The local radio had picked up the story and was broadcasting it. Television had also found out.
Mid-morning, Isabel heard a knock on Gloria’s door. Upon opening, she found a local television crew.
“Isabel? Gloria?” asked a smiling journalist. “We’re from Channel 7. We’d like to do a report about Boby, the hero dog.”
“How did you know where we live?” asked Gloria, surprised.
“The video has been shared thousands of times, and several people from the neighborhood gave us the address,” the journalist explained. “This is a story the city needs to hear. Amid so much sad news, Boby reminds us that there’s still goodness and courage in the world.”
Isabel went to get Boby. The dog, oblivious to all the commotion, was simply happy to see new people to greet.
The cameras turned on and they began the interview. Gloria and Isabel told the whole story: how they found Boby abandoned and dying, his struggle to survive, how he became part of their family, and finally, his heroic act.
“What did you feel when you saw what Boby did?” asked the journalist.
“Pride,” Isabel answered without hesitation. “Immense pride. But it didn’t completely surprise me either. Boby has always been special. Since the day we rescued him, he has shown he has an enormous heart.”
“I think Boby rescued us first,” Gloria added. “He taught us about unconditional love, gratitude, and now, about the true meaning of bravery.”
The journalist also contacted Juana, who gladly agreed to give her testimony.
“Boby saved my daughter’s life,” said Juana in front of the cameras, with her baby in her arms. “I was careless, and this wonderful dog compensated for my mistake. I will be eternally grateful.”
The special program was titled “Anonymous Heroes” and aired the next day. Isabel, Gloria, and Juana were invited to the television studio. Boby, of course, was the star of the show.
The show’s host, a charismatic man named Roberto, couldn’t contain his admiration.
“Boby, you’re an example for everyone,” he said, kneeling to pet him. “You teach us that it doesn’t matter where we come from or what we’ve suffered; we can always choose to be brave and generous.”
The studio audience applauded enthusiastically. Some were crying with emotion.
When the program ended and Gloria, Isabel, and Boby returned home, they found a wonderful surprise. The neighborhood residents had gathered in front of the house, along with dozens of children who had watched the program.
“Long live Boby!” the children shouted, waving signs they had made with drawings of the hero dog.
“Boby! Boby! Boby!” everyone chanted.
Boby, happy but a bit overwhelmed by so much attention, wagged his tail non-stop. He approached the children and let himself be petted by everyone, as he had always done.
“This dog has the biggest heart in the world,” commented Mrs. Martínez, an elderly neighbor. “I always knew it.”
The following days were a whirlwind of media attention. Boby received invitations to events, was offered dog food commercials, and even the mayor wanted to meet him.
But for Isabel and Gloria, the most important thing wasn’t the fame, but knowing they had done the right thing that spring afternoon, six years earlier, when they decided not to abandon a dying puppy.
Epilogue
Two years have passed since that memorable day. Boby is still the same playful, affectionate, and protective dog he’s always been. The fame gradually faded, as it usually does, but his family’s love remained intact.
Isabel got married and formed her own family. Boby, of course, was at the wedding, wearing a special bow they had put on him for the occasion. When Isabel’s first child was born, Boby became his most faithful guardian, sleeping next to the crib and alerting to any strange sound.
Gloria, now with more gray hair but with the same kind heart, continues to visit them every week. Pepita and Boby remain inseparable, spending their days playing and resting together.
Juana and her family became close friends of Gloria and Isabel. The baby Boby saved, now a three-year-old girl named Sofía, adores Boby. Every time she sees him, she runs to hug him shouting “My hero!”
Boby’s story is told in neighborhood schools as an example of bravery and gratitude. His photo hangs in Dr. Méndez’s veterinary clinic, with a plaque that says: “Boby, the dog who reminded us that every living being deserves a second chance.”
But for Isabel and Gloria, Boby isn’t a famous hero. He’s simply Boby: their faithful companion, their unconditional friend, the dying puppy they decided to save one spring afternoon and who returned that love multiplied a thousandfold.
Because in the end, what Boby taught them wasn’t just about bravery or heroism. He taught them that true love knows no limits, that gratitude is the universal language of the heart, and that sometimes, the best decisions of our lives are those we make when we decide to help someone who cannot help themselves.
And every night, when Boby cuddles up next to Isabel to sleep, she whispers the same words she told him that first night:
“Easy, Boby. You’re safe. You’ll always be safe with us.”
And Boby, with a contented sigh, closes his eyes knowing he finally found what every living being deserves: a home full of love.
The Lesson
This story teaches us that:
-
Every living being deserves a chance: Boby was on the brink of death when Gloria and Isabel found him. Many would have walked past, but they decided to act. That decision not only saved a life but also gained them a loyal friend and a hero.
-
Gratitude is the noblest feeling: Boby never forgot he was rescued. Every day he showed his gratitude with unconditional love. When the moment came, he returned that love by saving someone else.
-
True heroes act without thinking of rewards: Boby wasn’t seeking fame when he ran to save the baby. He did it because his kind heart told him it was the right thing to do.
-
Love heals all wounds: Boby arrived sick, abandoned, and scared. But the love and care of his family transformed him into a strong, happy, and brave dog.
-
Courage comes in all shapes and sizes: You don’t have to be big or strong to be brave. True courage is in doing the right thing when necessary, regardless of the risk.
-
Our actions have unexpected consequences: Gloria and Isabel never imagined that rescuing a puppy would result in saving a baby’s life years later. Every act of kindness creates a domino effect of good in the world.
-
Animals are sentient beings who deserve respect: Abandoning Boby was cruel and unjust. Rescuing him was an act of compassion. Animals feel, suffer, love, and deserve our respect and care.
May Boby’s story inspire us to be more compassionate, to act when we see injustice, and to remember that every life has value. Because we never know when that small act of kindness can change the world.
The End
